Barbara Howell Park Conservancy — Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why is the Barbara Howell Park Conservancy shutting down?

After four years of meaningful community work, BHPC did not achieve the self-sustaining organizational structure required for long-term viability. Over time, too much responsibility rested in too few hands. A nonprofit requires durable governance, financial systems, compliance infrastructure, and leadership continuity to thrive. Without those systems fully in place, continuing operations would not be responsible.

2. Is the Urbana Black Heritage Festival canceled permanently, or could it return?

The Urbana Black Heritage Festival is being retired under BHPC’s stewardship. This means BHPC will no longer produce or manage the festival. However, if an independent successor group steps forward by February 20, 2026, limited advisory support will be offered to assist with a potential transition of the festival outside of BHPC.

3. What happens to past donations and sponsorship support?

All past donations and sponsorships were used to support BHPC programming and operations during its active years. As part of the wind-down process, financial records are being documented to ensure a clean and responsible closeout.

Any excess funds from 2025 donations and contributions will be transferred to the Urbana City Parks and Recreation Office to support the ongoing upkeep and maintenance of Barbara Howell Park. BHPC remains committed to honoring the trust of supporters and protecting the integrity of the work completed.

4. Who made this decision? Was the board involved?

This decision was made by the founder, in consultation with and the full concurrence of the Board, following reflection on the organization’s long-term sustainability and leadership realities. The wind-down will follow a formal and orderly process to protect the organization, its stakeholders, and the community.

5. Will there be a final festival or closing celebration?

At this time, there are no plans for a final festival or closing event. The focus is on completing a responsible wind down, ensuring proper documentation, and closing this chapter with integrity and care.

6. Can another organization take over the festival?

Yes. If an independent organization or group is prepared to take on full ownership and responsibility for the festival, they may reach out to Brenda Howell at howellkb@gmail.com for advisory support, focused on information transfer and guidance on picking up the festival. BHPC will not maintain ongoing involvement or oversight.

7. How long will the BHPC website and social pages remain active?

BHPC’s digital platforms will remain available for a limited time during the wind-down period to share updates and provide clarity. They will not be maintained indefinitely once the closeout process is complete.

8. Who can I contact with additional questions?

For questions regarding clarification supporters may reach out to kalen@kalenhowellsr.com. Please note that responses may be limited as the organization completes its closeout.
